Overview

The Rey Cervantes Memorial Scholarship is given by the family of the late Plainfield Academy teacher Rey Cervantes, who passed away in December 2020 from COVID-19.

One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating District 202 senior who intends on attending a two- or four-year college or university to study in the field of education to become a teacher. 

Criteria

The scholarship must be used to further the student’s education whether at a post-secondary college or university, or a junior college to study education to become a teacher. Preference is given to those who plan to study special education. 

Qualifications

• Applicants must have a "C" average (cumulative GPA of 3 or higher)

• Provide a copy of first semester transcripts

• Provide up to two letters of recommendation

• Complete an essay answering these questions:

  • What do you hope to accomplish by going into the field of education?

  • What uniquely qualifies you to be chosen for this scholarship?
